The Norns: Songs and Prayers

image

I have quite a fondness for the Norns. When it came time to commission a horn, it was the Norns I asked to be used as the design.

The end result from Shrew was superb.

I have two songs about the Norns. The first was a collaboration with Jenn Roth Jones  called Twist and Weave which is available from her choral ensemble Bell, Book and Canto on iTunes.

Twist and Weave
Spin and tie
All the threads
We live and die

Guide the threads
Warp and weft
Cut and trim
The shuttle heft

Bind the luck
Read the fate
Stitch and knot
To create

The second song’s chorus/reprise is where this quote originates.

Goddesses gather at the well
Found at the base of the tree
Show us what has been and
what may yet come to be.

Verdande, Skuld and Urd
Web-Weavers Three
Show us what has been and
what may yet come to be.

Hamingja, Orlog or Wyrd,
Ladies tell us what you see
Show us what has been and
what may yet come to be.

Nornir we pray you guide our hands
And lay your blessings on we
Show us what has been and
what may yet come to be

.

Originally when I was first working on this piece, Web-Weavers Three was Wyrd Sisters Three. If I do the complete song I use Web-Weavers, but if I only do a small bit, then I sing the invocation as it appears on the graphic image far above.
